John Lennon was born in 1940 and lived with his aunt and uncle in Liverpool, England. When he was 12 he learnt to play the banjo but his ambition wasn't to be a musician - he wanted to be a millionaire! He was 17 when his mother died in a car accident.
As a teenager, he created the first group and they were called the Quarrymen. He met Paul McCartney in 1957 and they started the Beatles in 1960. Brian Epstein became their manager in 1961.
John married Cynthia in 1962 and they had a son called Julian. Later, John and Cynthia divorced and in November 1966 John met Yoko Ono in an art gallery in London.
On March 20th 1969, John and Yoko got married and the following year John left the Beatles and created Plastic Ono Band. They had their first hit with "Imagine" in 1971.
In 1975 John and Yoko went to New York and they had a son called Sean. John Lennon was shot outside his home in New York on December 8th, 1980.
